Festival season is upon us, and Company Magazine has a question: why so few female performers? The magazine reached out to Kate for her take on the issue, and despite her own experiences with sexism in the music industry, Kate’s confident that things will change. “This generation of girls will inspire the next, she said, and “girls need to keep breaking boundaries, not taking no for an answer, and being brave.”
Kate on Music Industry Sexism

Precisely why I’d rather fly to Chicago from Boston to see Kate Nash headline than go to any sausage fest within driving distance. Honestly, I prefer female vocals, and when I’m really caught by a gents voice its usually because he’s doing some falsetto trix. That’s not to be sexist, its just what my brain likes, I guess. I think I’m not alone on that.
Recently I went on youtube to look up one of regi’s songs (Ms. Spektor if your lost) and it was a particularly beautiful vocal/piano on her new album called “How” when I noticed some troll had put the nastiest comment that if she’d keep singing like that she could count on getting laid til she’s fifty-five not to expect much after that. Really if men are predisposed to comments like that, we’ve got so far to go yet. So far.
So for me, for now, festivals are not even an attractive event I’d like to go to. I wish Lorde had her own show in Boston this fall because I’d go, but I won’t be going to see her at Boston Calling. However, I already have tix for Lily’s show at HOB on the 20th here in town. Sheezus I can’t wait!
